कन्या भ्रूण हत्या के लिए हमेशा सुर्खियों में रहने वाले पंजाब में प्रकाश कौर 60 परित्यक्ता लड़कियों के लिए एक माँ सामान है। वह उन्हें एक जीवन देने के लिए उत्सुक रहती है ; जिनके लिए उनके अपने माता पिता उनकी मौत की कामना करते है |

उन अवांछित लावारिस या अनाथ बच्चियाँ जो सड़क के किनारे , बहते पानी में , कचरे के ढेर में या पालना घर के बाहर आधी रात के दौरान छोड़ दी जाती है जिनकि जिम्मेदारी निभाने से समाज बचता रहता है | 

ऐसी बच्चियों को जीवन देने का बाद उनको समाज में पुनर्स्थापित करना भी एक बहुत ही मुश्किल और चुनौती पूर्ण भरा काम है | जिसके लिए एक बड़े पैमाने पर, सामाजिक प्रयास की आवश्यकता है। इस काम का बीड़ा कुछ लोग ही उठा पाते उनमे एक नाम हैं बीबी प्रकश कौर , जो खुद अनाथ होने का दंश झेल चुकी हैं। वह जालंधर के ही एक होम में पली थी। इसके बाद उन्होंने फैसला किया कि वह खुद भी अनाथ लड़कियों के लिए ‘ यूनिक होम ‘ बनाएंगी। 

सादे सफ़ेद सलवार कमीज और एक साधाहरण सी चप्पल पहने बीबी प्रकाश कौर इन बच्चियों की सेवा के लिए हरदम तैयार रहती हैं | उन्होंने खुद अविवाहित रहते हुए अपना पूरा जीवन इन बच्चियों के लिए ही समर्पित कर दिया हैं | शुरुआत में यूनिक होम चेरिटेबल ट्रस्ट के ट्रस्टी के मॉडल हाऊस स्थित एक कमरे में चलाती थी, जिसके बाद लोगों की सहायता मिली और इसे छोटे से होम के साथ जिसे बाद में फंड मिलने पर नकोदर रोड पर भी यूनिक होम बना दिया। अब इसमें 58 लड़कियों को पनाह दे रखी है, जिन्हें बेदर्द मां बाप ने सड़कों पर मरने के लिए फैंक दिया था। यहीं की बच्ची ममता के नाम पर कनाडा में ममता होम चलाया जा रहा है। आज सब बच्चिय उन्हें ‘माँ ‘ कह कर बुलाती हैं क्योकि इस संस्था के पीछे मुख्य आत्मा बीबी प्रकाश कौर ही है जिनकी ममता की छावं के नीचे यह बच्चिया पलती हैं |

इन बच्चियों की यहाँ सभी बुनियादी दैनिक आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति की जाती हैं और उस के साथ-साथ एक प्यार भरा वातावरण दिया जाता है और उनको उचित शिक्षा भी प्रदान की जाती है और यह शिक्षा उन्हें उन्ही विधालयो में दिलवाई जाती हैं जिसमे समाज के बाकि बच्चे पढते हैं | हर नए बच्चे के आगमन पर इस यूनिक घर में जश्न का माहोल होता हैं ठीक उसी तरह जैसे किसी भी परिवार में परिवार के नए सदस्य के आगमन पर होता हैं | लड़कियों को एक धर्म के नाम की जगह हर धर्म के नाम दिए जाते हैं जैसे उन्हें सिख, हिंदू, मुस्लिम और ईसाई जिस से कि उनको धर्म के बारे में भी जानकारी रहे । एक वर्ष में एक बार, अप्रैल 24 पर वे सब अपने जन्मदिन मनाते हैं। इन लड़कियों की गोद देने की अनुमति नहीं है। कई लड़कियों के उच्च शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के लिए कॉलेज भी जाती हैं और कुछ शादी कर अपने हर चली जाती हैं । बीवी प्रकाश कौर यह हमेशा ध्यान रखती हैं कि उनकी बच्चिया जहा भी रहे अच्छी तरह से रहे हैं | उन्हें यहाँ इतना अच्छा माहोल मिलता है कि उनमे से कुछ लड़किया समाज में पूरी तरह स्थापित होने के बाद भी यहाँ वापिस आकर उन बच्चियों के लिए काम भी करती हैं जो अब उस घर में नई-२ आई हैं | 

प्रकाश कौर, जो आज बहुत सरे बच्चो की नानी भी हैं...गर्व से कहती है कि – आज यह मेरा मानना है कि यह केवल माता ही है जो अपने बच्चो को मानवता और प्रेम का पाठ पढ़ा कर इस समाज को बचा सकती हैं. वो आगे कहती हैं जरूरी नहीं कि "हम कुछ गंभीर और अलग सीखे इस समाज को चलाने के लिए , सिर्फ प्यार सबको कैसे सामान रूप से मिले इसको जानने की जरूरत हैं| आज अगर उनसे कोई उनकी इस सेवा के बारे में पूछता हैं तो वो कहती हैं कि मै तो एक आम इंसान हूँ और सरलता से आगे कहती हैं ऊपर वाला जो मेरे से करवा रहा हैं उसका आदेश मान कर मै कर रही हूँ .|

The founder and the spirit of Unique Home, the “mamma” of 60 girls, whom she refuses to call ‘adopted’. For her, they are the lord’s blessings. Dressed in a worn-off white salwar kameez, with simplest chappals in foot, she manages to avoid answering questions on her noble deeds and refuses any credit, each time. “It’s never me. It’s only my almighty who takes care of his own children through me. It may seem to a man that he alone is the doer, but the Power which makes him work is the ultimate. Man has nothing in his hand”, remarks the lady in white, who didn’t marry to provide life to the girls, considered dead by their parents.

Bhai Ghanayya Ji Charitable Trust was established on May 17th 1993 and runs Unique Home with an aim “Moral, Social, Cultural and Economic uplift of orphan children without any distinction of Caste, Creed and Religion”. 

The home is run by Bibi Prakash Kaur Ji who works selflessly to provide these young girls with a warm and loving environment in addition to basic daily necessities and a proper education.

Abandoned girls are typically left in a hatch that is attached to the home. Upon the arrival of every new child, the entire house rejoices at the addition of a family member. Girls are given Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Christian names, faith has no restrictions at Unique Home. Once a year, on April 24th they all celebrate their birthday. Bibi Prakash does not allow adoption of these girls for the fear that they will be solicited or abused. 

The main spirit behind this institution is Bibi Prakaash Kaur, whose aim is to rehabilitate those people whom society has disowned. 

Many of the girls go on to attend college and get married. Bibi Prakash Kaur continues to be involved in their lives to ensure that they are treated well. Some of the women return to provide care for the next generation of girls at Unique home. 

The lady has contributed immensely to the society. She also received 'heroes of India, 2011' an award by CNN-IBN, besides many national level recognitions for her noble deed of founding and managing a Unique Home for girls in Jalandhar.

In Punjab, there are those who don’t let the girl child take birth, some, who throw or dump her out once she is born, and then there are many those who though bring her up, but only to give her a life, devoid of her rights and freedom. Girls are surely getting good education today, but according to Bibi, it’s worthless if they are still made to feel to be of inferior gender in the family environment. Even when many of them have proven themselves in different fields, it has not influenced the tendency of Punjabis to long for sons. She calls upon the people of Punjab to actually follow the teachings of the Gurus and stop discriminating.

“They are disturbing the nature’s balance by killing daughters. Man has acquired animal flair due to this. Child abuses, rapes, harassment all are consequences of depleting ethical character. The only way things can be made better is by strengthening moralities, right from the young age, through school and college education”. She firmly supports the need for a compulsory subject of moral values, with quality teachings of verses from scriptures of all religions. This would ensure an enlightened generation. 

She even pleads media and TV industry to spread patriotism and value based entertainment for budding minds.

A proud nani of grandchildren of some of her married daughters, Parkash Kaur, believes it is only the mothers who can save the society, by nurturing their children with ‘love of humanity’—the words she fondly propagates. “We need not learn anything grave and different, just, how to love humanity, equally.”

A social worker, dutiful soul, innocently modest, whatever was said to define her, seemed a bit small in front of her divine persona. Aged but face afresh with zeal. Commonest attire but thoughts ahead of times. Tough but epitome of compassion and love, here was a woman who showed the world what a woman could do for women – creating a better world.
