जब देश अंग्रेजी हुकुमत के फंदे में था और तब किसी महिला का आगे बढ़कर ना केवल पत्रकारिता में अपनी मजबूत दखल बनाना बल्कि संपादक की जिम्मेदारी तक पहुंच जाना मायने रखता है। यह नाम है हेमंत कुमारी देवी जो देश की पहली महिला पत्रकार बनी। हेमंत कुमारी वर्ष 1888 में इलाहाबाद से प्रकाशित होने वाली महिलाओं की पत्रिका- ‘सुगृहिणी’ की संपादक थीं

हेमंत कुमारी देवी का जन्म 1868 में हुआ था। वे शिलांग के ब्रह्म समाज के अनुयायी नवीन चंद्र राय की पुत्री थीं। ‘सुगृहिणी’ के प्रथम अंक में उन्होंने संपादकीय में एक विशेष संवाद लिखा था। प्रस्तुत है उसके अंश:...

“ओ मेरी प्रिय बहन, अपने दरवाजें को खोलो और देखो कि कौन आया है ? यह आपकी बहन ‘सुगृहिणी’ है। यह आपके पास इसलिए आई है क्योंकि आप पर अत्याचार हो रहा है, आप अशिक्षित हो और एक बंधन में बंधे हो... इसका स्वागत करो और इसे आशीर्वाद दो। मां तुम्हारी और सुगृहिणी की सहायता करें।”

हिन्दी क्षेत्र उन दिनों में भी पिछड़ा हुआ इलाका था, जहां महिलाओं में निरक्षरता बहुत ज्यादा थी और यहां तक कि अच्छे घरों की महिलाओं में भी साक्षरता की कमी थी। अधिकांशत: औरतों को कोई औपचारिक शिक्षा नहीं मिली थी। ब्रह्म समाज ने महिलाओं की स्थिति में सुधार के लिए शिक्षा पर जोर दिया, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप विभिन्न प्रकाशनों का पदार्पण हुआ। हेमंत कुमारी देवी की मातृभाषा बंगाली थी। उनकी प्रारंभिक शिक्षा आगरा में रोमन कैथोलिक कन्वेंट और उसके बाद लाहौर एवं कलकता में हुई थी। उन्हें हेमंत कुमारी चौधराइन के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। 1906 में वे पटियाला गईं जहां वे 1924 तक रहीं और उसके बाद उनकी पोस्टिंग देहरादून में नगर निगम आयुक्त के पद पर हुई, जहां उनकी मृत्यु 1953 में हो गई।

Born in 1868, Hemant Kumari Devi was daughter of the Shillong-based Navin Chandra Rai, a Brahmo Samaji. She was the first women journalist in Hindi, the editor of journal for women- Sugrihini which was published from Allahabad. The opening lines of here editorial in the first issue of her journal Sugrahini, had a particular message:

“ O my dear sisters, open your doors & see who has come to visit you. This is a sister of yours called Sugrihini. She has come to you because you are oppressed and illiterate and in bondage….. Welcome her & bless her. May the mother help you and Sugrihini…”

The Hindi belt even in those days was a backward area, where illiteracy amongst women was endemic and even within well-to-do families; most women did not receive any formal education. The Brahmo-Samaj, mind-set, which encouraged education of women, was undoubtedly a major factor behind the emergence of various publications.Hemant Kumari Devi’s mother tongue was Bengali. She was educated in Roman Catholic convent in Agra and later in Lahore and Calcutta, she was also known as Hemant Kumani Chaudharni. In 1906, she went to Patiala, where she stayed till 1924 and was transferred to Dehradun as a Municipal Commissioner, where she died during 1953.
