FRC Path., FAMS, FNA, FNASc, D.Sc. (h.c.)

She is among the few who inspire you to look at the broader picture and go beyond narrow selfish interests. Recipient of Padma Shri (1999) for her contribution to the field of immunology, Professor (Ms) Indira Nath is someone who would easily fit the term ``class apart''.
Prof. Nath is more than just a world renowned authority on leprosy, whose research spanning the fundamental aspects of human immune response has aided creation of tools for diagnostics, immunotherapy and antigens for clinical investigation.
She is also a content grandmother, an ardent bonsai lover and compulsive swimmer who ``has to try really hard not to jump into the pool everytime I see one''.
The eldest daughter of a CPWD engineer, Prof. Nath's discovery constitutes a significant step towards the development of treatment and vaccines for leprosy. At present, this 60-year-old is Head of the Department of Biotechnology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Professor at the S.N. Bose Centre.
Having placed India on the world map with her path breaking research, Prof. Nath has now given the people another reason to cheer. This past Thursday, she became the first Indian to be awarded the L'Oreal-UNESCO 2002 award for ``Women in Science -- Asia/Pacific Region''. She was chosen from among 100 candidates recommended by over 800 internationally renowned scientists.
But her winning came as a surprise to few. ``Unlike most people, I have never had a dilemma about what to do in life. When I was ten, I decided that I wanted to become a doctor, by second year medical college, I was sure I wanted to specialize in pathology, and later I was clear I wanted to do research,'' she says.
The clear thought process continued even when she decided to get married to a classmate. ``My parents were aghast. He was a North Indian. But all the resistance aside we got married right after our internship and then decided to go abroad. But both of us were clear we wanted to return to India,'' says Prof. Nath.
“And we had reasons for wanting to come back. Both of us had studied in an environment where we were encouraged to look beyond studying from western books. We were attuned to asking question, to look for reasons and were aware that we had a social responsibility.''
Later when she returned to India in the early 1980s, immunology was still in its infancy and Prof. Nath got actively involved in developing an immunology workshop at AIIMS under the aegis of World Health Organisation and the Indian Council of Medical Research for the South-East Region.
She also went on to develop the first department in India at AIIMS in 1986 with a view to train biomedical personnel in immunology, molecular biology and modern biology aspect. But Prof. Nath had to pay a heavy price for walking the untread path. ``I became the longest serving professor at AIIMS, routine promotions never seemed to reach me. It wasn't like anyone was trying to pull me down or something, the administrative system was such,'' she says.
She later found the same apathy in the government health policies. ``The Indian government hasn't made use of the research work being done in-house, we rather have western expertise,'' she rues. But what worries Prof. Nath is the state of research in the country today. ``We are just moving from epidemic to epidemic. Doctors today are not keen to do research work, they are rusting their learning skills.''

Dr Renu Khator ........

Dr Renu Khator (Born: 29-Jun-1955-Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh (India))
2007 : honored with the prestigious Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) award
Her life philosophy,
"When life gives you lemons and everyone else is busy making lemonade, think about making margaritas!"
 Ensure that student success is our fundamental mission
Place the student at the center of every decision

Patricia Narayan
winner of this year's 'Ficci Woman Entrepreneur of the Year'

FICCI Woman Entrepreneur of the year, Patricia Narayan's tale may sound like the quintessential rags- to- riches story, but it is also a stark tale of survival. An entrepreneur by accident, director of Sandeepha Chain of Restaurants, Patricia belongs to the ilk of those who bloom in adversity.

“Till the FICCI award was announced, I never realised what I had achieved. It was an opportunity to look back.” says Ms. Patricia unassumingly, attributing her success to ‘lady luck'.Hailing from a conservative Christian family from Nagercoil, her marriage to a Brahmin caused an uproar in her family. Soon, all went downhill for Patricia who suffered abuse at the hands of her drug addict husband. At 18, Patricia was left to fend for herself and her two children.

“I reached the crossroads where I had to choose between living and dying. I chose to live.” Keeping her two children in mind, Patricia decided to fight her own battle. “My entire life has been driven by my determination to be independent.” Her passion for cooking only fuelled her will to survive. She started out by selling pickles, jams and squashes. From then on, there was no looking back and she set up a kiosk at the Marina beach, selling juice and cutlets. Her first- day sales would not count as memorable- she sold one cup of coffee for 50 paise- undeterred, she was back at the Marina next day.“I had no time to sympathise with myself. Soon, my hands were full and I was running all the time.”

Ms. Patricia's road to becoming a restaurateur was no overnight miracle but a journey spanning 30 years. She took up catering contracts in the cafeterias of the Slum Clearance Board, Bank of Madura and the National Institute of Port Management after which she forged a partnership with one of the restaurants of a leading hotel chain in Chennai.

Patricia's progress was halted briefly when tragedy struck in the form of her newly married daughter's death. A bereaved Patricia left her business to her son Praveen. After two years, the resilient woman came back and set up her first restaurant named after her daughter Sandheepa.

“Everybody should have a motto in life to succeed. At that time, mine was to stand by my son.”According to her, the hallmark of the restaurant is the home-made quality of the food. She advises entrepreneurs in the food sector never to compromise on quality or hygiene.

Ms. Patricia also operates an ambulance service from Acharapakkam, the spot of her daughter's accident to Chengalpet. “I shall never forget the sight of my daughter's corpse which arrived in the boot of a car, as the ambulance had refused to take her.” Willpower is the most important attribute to succeed, claims the entrepreneur. “When she sets her mind to something, she always achieves it,” her son Praveen asserts. Not a complacent entrepreneur, she sets targets for herself . Her next goal? “To operate a cruise liner,” a wish that was triggered off at an event in Tiruchi. Going by her record, this should be a cruise as well.

Ficci entrepreneur of the year award
I started my business with just two people. Now, there are 200 people working for me in my restaurants. My lifestyle has changed too. From travelling in a cycle rickshaw, I moved to auto rickshaws and now I have my own car. From 50 paise a day, my revenue has gone up to Rs 2 lakh a day.

The 'Ficci entrepreneur of the year' award is the culmination of all the hard work I have put in over the last 30 years. It came as a surprise as this is the first time I have received an award.

Till now, I had no time to think of what I was doing. But the award made me look back and relive the days that passed by. Now, my ambition is to build my Sandeepha brand.

Advice to young entrepreneurs

Do not ever compromise on quality. Never lose your self-confidence. Believe in yourself and the product you are making. Third, always stick to what you know. When you employ people, you should know what you ask them to do

Nileema Mishra
social worker.....commited for the upliftment of poor rural villagers.........winner of Magsaysay award this year (2011)

Nileema Mishra (39 yrs) , resident of Bahardarpur in Jalgaon, 375 km from Mumbai, was presented the Magsaysay award for her tireless contribution to rural work on Wednesday this year . Nileema was born to a middle-class family in the village of Bahadarpur, Maharashtra. With a master's degree in clinical psychology, she could have gone on to a comfortable life as an urban professional. But even as a child Nileema was sensitive to the crippling poverty in her village. When she was only thirteen, she told friends that she had made up her mind she would not marry, so she could devote her whole life to helping the poor. This was not merely a young girl's romantic fancy, as subsequent events would show. Mishra, popularly known as Didi, has been working in Parola tehsil since 2000.
Five years after finishing her studies in 1995, Nileema returned to her village to organize Bhagini Nivedita Gramin Vigyan Niketan (BNGVN), or Sister Nivedita Rural Science Center, named after an Anglo-Irish missionary who devoted her life to helping Indian women of all castes. BNGVN did not begin with a development model in mind, except the conviction that the community's problems must be addressed from within the village itself. Inspired by Gandhi's vision of a self-sufficient, prosperous village, Nileema decided that her group would not work out of the priorities of donors, or compete for government projects.. People would identify their own problems and find the solutions. In her determined manner, Nileema repeatedly told village women who confided their problems to her:
"Don't despair, we shall find a way."
And they did find the ways. Starting with a self-help group of only fourteen women, other self-help groups followed, engaging in microcredit and such income-generating activities as the production of food products and distinctive exportquality quilts. BNGVN enabled these changes by training women in production, marketing, accounting, and computer literacy. Inspired by Nileema, the women went on to build a warehouse so they could procure supplies in bulk at better prices, and formed an association that now has outlets for its products in four districts of the state. Traditionally confined to the home, these village women have become productive, articulate, and confident in their ability to think for themselves.
But the men in the villages, too, have their problems. Driven by extreme economic distress, a shocking wave of farmers' suicides struck Maharashtra. Nileema and her group responded by raising their work to the level of the village itself. BNGVN helped create a village revolving fund that provided loans for farm inputs and emergency needs; they addressed health problems by building over 300 private and communal toilets; and activated a village assembly to discuss and resolve local needs.
The success of Bahadarpur inspired Nileema to expand her work. In less than ten years, BNGVN has formed 1,800 selfhelp groups in 200 villages across Maharashtra. Its microcredit program has caused to be distributed the equivalent of US$5 million, with a hundred-percent loan recovery rate. But the most critical change has taken place in the villagers' sense of themselves, their newfound confidence that they need not despair, that, working together, they will find a way. For Nileema, now 39 years old, the way has not been easy. She has had to battle frustration and failure, to find which approaches work best for the village. But she remains resolute and passionate about her work. Asked what she speaks of the villagers: "I'm very thankful to them. They are ready to improve themselves."

In electing Nileema Mishra to receive the 2011 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership, the board of trustees recognizes her purpose-driven zeal to live and work tirelessly with villagers in Maharashtra, India, organizing them to successfully address both their aspirations and their adversities through collective action and heightened confidence in their potential to improve their own lives.
She has decided to donate the entire prize money to her rural microcredit project, In the past, she has got around half a dozen small awards, and every paisa she donated to her cause. Even the prize money from Magsaysay Award will go to Bhagini Nivedita Gramin Vigyan Niketan (BNGVN),The award carries a purse of $50,000 (Rs.22 lakh).
The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established to perpetuate former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay's example of integrity in government, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often considered Asia's Nobel Prize. The prize was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government.

(January 3, 1831- March 10, 1897)

Savitribai Jotiba Phule (January 3, 1831- March 10, 1897) was a social reformer who along with her husband, Mahatma Jotiba Phule played an important role in improving women's rights in India during the British Rule.

Savitribai was the first female teacher of the first women's school in India and also considered as the pioneer of modern Marathi poetry. In 1852 she opened a school for Untouchable girls.

Mahatma Jyotiba is regarded as one of the most important figures in social reform movement in Maharashtra and India. He is most known for his efforts to educate women and the lower castes. Jyotirao, then called as Jyotiba was Savitribai’s mentor and supporter. Under his influence Savitribai had taken women’s education and their liberation from the cultural patterns of the male-dominated society as mission of her life. She worked towards tackling some of the then major social problems including women’s liberation, widow remarriages and removal of untouchability.

However, apart from all these oppositions, Savitribai yet continued to teach the girls. Whenever Savitribai went out of her house, groups of orthodox men would follow her and abuse her in obscene language. They would throw rotten eggs, cow dung, tomatoes and stones at her. She would walk meekly and arrive at her school. Fed up with the treatment meted out to her, she even decided to give up. But it was because of her husband that she continued with her efforts. He told Savitribai Jyotiba who was working for women's education had started the first girl’s school and required women teachers to assist him. Jyotiba educated and trained Savitribai, his first and ideal candidate for this job of a teacher. Savitribai and Jyotiba faced fierce resistance from the orthodox elements of society for this. Jyotiba sent her to a training school from where she passed out with flying colours along with a Muslim lady Fatima Sheikh. When Savitribai completed her studies, she, along with her husband, started a school for girls in Pune in 1848. Nine girls, belonging to different castes enrolled themselves as students.

Slowly and steadily, she established herself. Jyotiba and Savitribai managed to open 5 more schools in the year 1848 itself. She was ultimately honoured by the British for her educational work. In 1852 Jyotiba and Savitribai were felicitated and presented with a shawl each by the government for their commendable efforts in Vishrambag Wada.

The next step was equally revolutionary. During those days marriages were arranged between young girls and old men. Men used to die of old age or some sickness and the girls they had married were left widows. Thus, widows were not expected to use cosmetics or to look beautiful. Their heads were shaved and the widows were compelled by society to lead an ascetic life.

Savitribai and Jyotiba were moved by the plight of such widows and castigated the barbers. They organized a strike of barbers and persuaded them not to shave the heads of widows. This was the first strike of its kind. They also fought against all forms of social prejudices. They were moved to see the untouchables who were refused drinking water meant for the upper caste. Both Jyotiba and Savitribai opened up their reservoir of water to the untouchables in the precincts of their house.

Savitribai was not only involved in educational activities of Jyotirao but also in every social struggle that he launched. Once Jyotiba stopped a pregnant lady from committing suicide, promising her to give her child his name after it was born. Savitribai readily accepted the lady in her house and willingly assured to help her deliver the child. Savitribai and Jyotiba later on adopted this child who then grew up to become a doctor and after Jyotiba's death, lit his pyre and completed his duties as a rightful son. This incident opened new horizons for the couple. They thought of the plight of widows in Hindu society. Many women were driven to commit suicide by men who had exploited them to satisfy their lust and then deserted them. Therefore, Savitribai and Jyotiba put boards on streets about the "Delivery Home" for women on whom pregnancy had been forced. The delivery home was called "Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha".

Jyotiba and Savitribai were also opposed to idolatry and championed the cause of peasants and workers. They faced social isolation and vicious attacks from people whom they questioned. After his demise, Savitribai took over the responsibility of Satya Shodhak Samaj, founded by Jyotiba. She presided over meetings and guided workers.

In 1868 she welcomed untouchables to take water from her well.
She worked relentlessly for the victims of plague, where she organized camps for poor children. It is said that she used to feed two thousand children every day during the epidemic. She herself was struck by the disease while nursing a sick child and died on 10 March 1897.

Neerja Bhanot................

(September 7, 1963 – September 5, 1986)

Neerja Bhanot (September 7, 1963 – September 5, 1986)
youngest recipient of India’s highest civilian award for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra.

Neerja Bhanot
Neerja Bhanot (September 7, 1963 – September 5, 1986 , was a flight attendant for Pan Am airlines, based in Bombay, India, who died while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on September 5, 1986, she went on to become the youngest recipient of India’s highest civilian award for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra.
Neerja Bhanot, born in Chandigarh, India, was the daughter of Rama Bhanot and Harish Bhanot, a Mumbai based journalist. She was an alumnus of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, Bombay Scottish School and St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
Neerja had an arranged marriage in March, 1985 and joined her husband in the Gulf. However, the marriage turned sour following dowry pressure and she returned to her parents' home in Mumbai within two months. Subsequently, she applied for a flight attendant’s job with Pan Am Airline, and upon selection, went to Miami for training as a flight attendant but returned as purser.

Neerja Bhanot was the senior flight purser on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73, hijacked after it landed at Karachi at 5 am from Mumbai by four heavily armed terrorists. PA 73 was en route to Frankfurt and onward to New York City . Neerja alerted the cockpit crew about the hijack and, as the plane was on the tarmac, the three-member cockpit crew of pilot, co-pilot and the flight engineer were able to flee from the aircraft. Neerja, being the senior-most cabin crew member on board took on the mantle of leadership in a cool, calm, confident manner.
The hijackers were part of the Abu Nidal Group and as they were allegedly backed by Libya, they were seeking to kill Americans in revenge for the American bombing of Tripoli a few months earlier. They immediately shot dead a passenger who identified himself to the terrorists as being an American. The terrorists, then, instructed Neerja to get the passports collected of all the passengers, so that they could identify the Americans. In a daring act of compassion, Neerja and the other attendants under her charge, hid the passports of the 41 Americans on board and this, in all probability, saved their lives.Indeed, if the terrorists had come to know of this act of Neerja, they would have surely killed her there and then.
After 17 hours, the hijackers opened fire and set off explosives. Acting quickly, Neerja opened the emergency door and helped a number of passengers escape. If she wanted, she could have been the first to jump out of the aircraft and escape.However, she did not and gave her own life while shielding 3 children from a hail of bullets. Neerja was recognised internationally as "the heroine of the hijack" and is the youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest civilian award for bravery.

For her bravery the Government of India posthumously awarded her the Ashoka Chakra (India's highest decoration for gallantry away from the battlefield, or not in the face of the enemy), being its youngest recipient. In 2004 the Indian Postal Service released a stamp commemorating her.
With the money from the insurance settlement and an equal contribution from Pan Am, Neerja's parents set up the 'Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust'. The trust presents two awards every year, one for a flight crew member, worldwide, who actsan beyond the call of duty and another to Indian woman who, when faced with social injustice like dowry, desertion etc. overcomes it with guts and grit AND then helps other women in similar social distress. The award includes a sum of INR 1,50,000, a trophy and a citation.
A square called Neerja Bhanot Chowk is named after her in Mumbai's Ghatkopar (east) suburb by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
The civil aviation ministry of India conferred an honor on Neerja Bhanot posthumously on February 18, 2010 in New Delhi on the occasion of the launch of the celebrations of the centenary of Indian Aviation.
